Synopsis
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secretive and oldest events – the selection of a new Pope – he finds himself at the centre of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. This is Carlos Diez’s first major film appearance, having previously appeared only in two short student films. He was an architect by profession until 2020, when his last child left home and he decided to pursue new interests with online acting classes and auditions. Cardinal Benitez will deliver his opening address in Spanish. It’s a little hard to believe that all the other cardinals can easily understand him.

All of the cardinals are fluent in Latin by default, and many speak Italian in other conversations in the film. All of these languages belong to the Romance language family, so it’s not hard to assume that most of the cardinals will understand Spanish. As Cardinal Tremblay, John Lithgow delivers a masterclass in villainy, blending charm with cunning so seamlessly that it’s impossible not to be captivated by his machinations. Themes and Symbolism: “Conclave” isn’t just about the election of the Pope; it’s a microcosm of power, tradition versus modernity, and the human condition. The climax, with its revelation about Cardinal Benitez, serves not only as a plot but also as a profound commentary on identity, acceptance, and the changing face of global religion. Cinematography and Music: The visual language of “The Conclave” deserves special mention. The Vatican’s cramped quarters are shot with a claustrophobic intimacy that reflects the characters’ internal struggles.
Bottom Line: “The Conclave” is a tour de force of cinema
The haunting and evocative score heightens the sense of isolation and stakes, complementing the image and creating an almost tactile experience of the tension of the conclave. It is a film that entertains, provokes and lingers in the mind long after the credits roll. Berger, the cast and crew have not only adapted the book into a film, but elevated it to a critique of power, faith and human nature.
