series, a medium telephoto
Synopsis
The series follows Katherine Ravenscroft, a documentary television journalist whose work revolves around exposing the wrongdoings of long-respected institutions. Gary Oldman was initially rumored to be cast, but Kevin Kline replaced him. Jonathon uses the same lens in several episodes.
Such a lens wouldn’t be able to focus on close objects, like a selfie with Sasha or in the bedroom with Katrina
Dang! I had no idea what kind of experience I was in for when I started watching this limited AppleTV+ series starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline. "Denial" based on the novel of the same name by Rene Knight, it was written for the screen and directed by Alfonso Cuaron.
It’s essentially a revenge story
Blanchett plays Catherine, a journalist whose past secrets come to light in disturbing ways, forcing her to confront a past that is destroying her life. It was a masterfully told story that took us on a fascinating journey of discovery as the audience was shown (sometimes in vivid detail) the “events” of Katrina’s past. Blanchett is fantastic here as always, and Kline also gives a solid performance.
Note: There is some pretty overt depiction of sex/intimacy in various episodes
It was great to see Sacha Baron Cohen in a more serious role, but he did it right. Despite a few/a few minor hiccups, I highly recommend this series if you like character dramas with some tension/intrigue. There isn’t much action in it, and it took me about half an episode (about 30 minutes) to finally “get” into the story.
Video review coming soon
But boy am I glad I stuck around.
